Outline

We would like to impose the notion of `Prototypical Shelter´. Referring to adaptive social and material networks, we raise the issues of regarding highly intelligent, temporary shelter within changing urban modes of connectivity and spatial discontinuity.

Shifting to inherent paradigms of minimal, collective space, apart from existing structures and planned programs, incidents of `being sheltered´ may occur through an additional introduction of various parameters within the choreography of social diagrams.

Digital Fabrication Technology

Designers who became introduced to digital fabrication technology are dealing with the expanding diversity of using laser cutter to five-axis routing, and stereolithography to three-dimensional physical printing. This is leading to a re-engagement with the means of production by the profession and a rediscovery of craft in architecture.

    FIBROUS STRUCTURE PROJECT, ecoLogicStudio

Additive processes including laser sintering, stereolithography and three-dimensional printing produced components that appear to be products of subtractive sculpture but are all formed topographically layer-by-layer. Thus the conventional sculptural distinction between constructional and substraction has been totally subverted.

Structural Order/ Material Organization

In recent years generative systems in nature have become a source of inspiration for a number of architects and artists. Rather than viewing design as a top-down, linear, and goal-oriented procedure, they seek to understand underlying rules and principles of natural systems, which produce structural order and material organization of high complexity, efficiency, and beauty.

Parametrically Controlled System/ Rule-Based Approach

Research in this context focuses on how parametrically controlled systems can be applied to design in order to achieve more responsive and adaptive modelling techniques. Working with various software packages, a rule-based approach to design introduces a whole new set of opportunities, which designers then have the responsibility to further explore and develop.

INSTALLATION WORKSHOP SS08, instructor Ulrika Karlsson

A parametric design system is based on a hierarchy of variable-controlled dependencies; each active variable causes the overall system to change its behaviour and thereby generate variations without losing the overall coherence and integrity of the model. Individual components can be linked in ways that allow constant and immediate feedback throughout the model regardless of scale and hierarchy. Due to these new modes of production, user-specific, customized products can be manufactured more economically - based on a catalogue of new materials, ranging from recycled industrial waste products to high-tech materials.

Changing Urban Modes of Connectivity and Discontinuity

The design of the network of dependencies becomes a crucial part of the overall design by highlighting certain relationships over others and thereby allowing for specific local changes to impact the model´s global scale and behaviour. Within the urban fabric of contemporary cities emerging patterns of social and economic tension as well as increasing environmental imbalance ask for complex strategies of stimulation and interaction.

MILLION DONKEY HOTEL, feld72

Design as iterative process, responding to changing environmental pressures seeks to develop behavioural patterns in relation to its context. Sensual, atmospheric experiences are being provided and adapted to varying surrounding conditions. Ideally a catalogue of operational typologies may serve the purpose of re-connection as well as co-action in the midst of alienated and disrupted urban networks.
